Five Organizations in the Southeast Recognized as 2010 WasteWise Award Winners

February 2, 2011

(ATLANTA - Feb. 2, 2011) - Five WasteWise partners in the southeast were recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for outstanding achievements as 2010 WasteWise award winners.  Nationally, there were twenty-four winners, with awards in categories including business, government, and educational sectors.

The 2010 awardees are:

Better World Books, Georgia - Better World Books collects and sells new and used books online, diverting waste from landfills and donating a portion of each sale to help literacy initiatives worldwide.  In 2009, the company recycled 7,090 tons of materials, which is the carbon dioxide equivalent to removing 2,900 passenger vehicles from the road for one year.

Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp (FCCC), South Carolina
- Freightliner is the nation's largest producer of diesel-powered chassis for the RV and walk-in van industry.  FCCC's extensive efforts have taken them from dumping 125 tons of solid waste per month in January 2008 to zero landfilling in September 2009, saving them $157,598 in 2009 alone.

Fetter Group, Kentucky - Fetter Group, a printing company out of Louisville, has implemented several waste prevention ideas, such as switching to reusable plastic shipping boxes, decreasing trim waste during its label printing process, and no longer using "proof approval stickers," eliminating the production of more than 10,000 proof stickers per year.  In 2009, Fetter Group achieved a 93 percent diversion rate, reducing or reusing 955 tons of materials, and adding $250,000 to its bottom line.

Florida Department of Financial Services, Division of Legal Services -The Division of Legal Services provides legal counsel to Florida's Chief Financial Officer and State Fire Marshal.  The Division has implemented several environmentally friendly practices, such as electronic filing of documents, enabling energy-save mode for electronics, reducing employee travel, freezing non-mission critical office supply ordering, encouraging double siding of draft documents, and others.  The Division's paper reduction efforts saved Florida taxpayers more than $1 million in 2009.  Their switch to I-Serve, an electronic tool which processes lawsuits for insurers, reduced paper use by 1.5 million pages per year, and saved more than $85,000.

Georgia Environmental Protection Division, Tradeport Complex - In 2009, employees recycled 100 tons of traditional recyclables, and diverted one ton of used coffee grounds from the break room for use in home compost bins. Combined, these efforts saved taxpayers almost $6,500, and represent a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to approximately 37,000 gallons of gasoline.

WasteWise is a free, voluntary partnership program that helps businesses reduce their environmental impact and find cost savings through innovative waste reduction and recycling activities.  The program currently has over 2,700 participating partners and endorsers.

FetterGroup Among First to Accept an EPA Challenge to Improve Energy Efficiency in Manufacturing and Industrial Buildings

May 7, 2010

Louisville, KY - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today recognized FetterGroup in the first group of manufacturing sites that have met the Energy Star Challenge for Industry and reduced their energy intensity by 10 percent or more within 5 years or less. The U.S. manufacturing industry is responsible for nearly 30 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States and spends almost $100 billion annually on energy. Under the umbrella of the Energy Star Challenge for Industry, EPA is working with individual manufacturing sites and their parent companies to fight climate change and save money through improvements in energy efficiency.

FetterGroup is one of 8 US companies to participate in the latest EPA initiative. The program may be new, but FetterGroup is no stranger to making environmental sustainability a significant part of their business strategy. Since adopting a comprehensive energy plan in 2007, FetterGroup has reduced their overall energy usage by 33% and saved 4,776,000 pounds of CO2. This is equivalent to the annual impact from 414 cars, or the CO2 emissions from the energy use of over 100 homes.

FetterGroup President and CEO Terry Gill, credits their energy policy with easing the economic uncertainty over the last two years. Gill says, “The importance of a strong energy policy in the manufacturing and industrial sectors makes clear financial sense. The monetary savings we have seen from our environmental policy is the most compelling reason to pursue these measures. The incremental savings add up and those savings translate into new equipment, new investments in technology, and more jobs.”

FetterGroup is a 2010 EPA Energy Star Partner of the Year, 2010 Waste Wise Partner of the Year, and the first Kilowatt Cup recipient in recognition of superior energy management among Louisville-based companies.

The manufacturing facilities to meet or exceed the 10 percent reduction goal within 5 years or less under the Energy Star Challenge for Industry are:

- FetterGroup’s Headquarters Facility in Louisville, Ky.: 23 percent reduction (2007-2009)
- Kodak's Manitou site in Rochester, N.Y.: 25 percent reduction (2007-2009)
- Kodak’s GCG Columbus manufacturing site in Columbus, Ga.: 10 percent reduction (2007-2008)
- Shearer's Foods, Inc.’s Lubbock, Texas plant: 15 percent reduction (2009-2010)
- Detroit Diesel’s Redford Component Manufacturing Center in Detroit, Mich.: 17 percent reduction (2008-2009)
- John B. Sanfilippo & Son, Inc.’s Elgin Headquarters facility in Elgin, Ill.: 17 percent reduction (2008-2009)
- John B. Sanfilippo & Son, Inc.’s Selma, Texas facility: 26 percent reduction (2008-2009)
- John B. Sanfilippo & Son, Inc.’s Garysburg, N.C. facility: 23 percent reduction (2008-2009)

Total annual energy savings for these companies are equal to the energy to power all the homes on the island of Nantucket for a year. Annual carbon dioxide savings are nearly 34,000 metric tons - equal to the emissions from nearly 6,500 cars.

Under the Energy Star Challenge for Industry, manufacturing sites establish an energy intensity baseline, set a 10 percent reduction goal, implement energy efficiency projects, track energy use and verify their savings. Any U.S. manufacturing site may participate in the Energy Star Challenge for Industry.

Manufacturing accounts for 30 percent of energy use in the United States. If the energy efficiency of industrial facilities improved by 10 percent, EPA estimates that Americans would save nearly $10 billion and reduce greenhouse gas emissions equal to about 12 million vehicles.
