Five Organizations in the Southeast Recognized as 2010 WasteWise Award Winners

February 2, 2011

(ATLANTA - Feb. 2, 2011) - Five WasteWise partners in the southeast were recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for outstanding achievements as 2010 WasteWise award winners.  Nationally, there were twenty-four winners, with awards in categories including business, government, and educational sectors.

The 2010 awardees are:

Better World Books, Georgia - Better World Books collects and sells new and used books online, diverting waste from landfills and donating a portion of each sale to help literacy initiatives worldwide.  In 2009, the company recycled 7,090 tons of materials, which is the carbon dioxide equivalent to removing 2,900 passenger vehicles from the road for one year.

Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp (FCCC), South Carolina
- Freightliner is the nation's largest producer of diesel-powered chassis for the RV and walk-in van industry.  FCCC's extensive efforts have taken them from dumping 125 tons of solid waste per month in January 2008 to zero landfilling in September 2009, saving them $157,598 in 2009 alone.

Fetter Group, Kentucky - Fetter Group, a printing company out of Louisville, has implemented several waste prevention ideas, such as switching to reusable plastic shipping boxes, decreasing trim waste during its label printing process, and no longer using "proof approval stickers," eliminating the production of more than 10,000 proof stickers per year.  In 2009, Fetter Group achieved a 93 percent diversion rate, reducing or reusing 955 tons of materials, and adding $250,000 to its bottom line.

Florida Department of Financial Services, Division of Legal Services -The Division of Legal Services provides legal counsel to Florida's Chief Financial Officer and State Fire Marshal.  The Division has implemented several environmentally friendly practices, such as electronic filing of documents, enabling energy-save mode for electronics, reducing employee travel, freezing non-mission critical office supply ordering, encouraging double siding of draft documents, and others.  The Division's paper reduction efforts saved Florida taxpayers more than $1 million in 2009.  Their switch to I-Serve, an electronic tool which processes lawsuits for insurers, reduced paper use by 1.5 million pages per year, and saved more than $85,000.

Georgia Environmental Protection Division, Tradeport Complex - In 2009, employees recycled 100 tons of traditional recyclables, and diverted one ton of used coffee grounds from the break room for use in home compost bins. Combined, these efforts saved taxpayers almost $6,500, and represent a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to approximately 37,000 gallons of gasoline.

WasteWise is a free, voluntary partnership program that helps businesses reduce their environmental impact and find cost savings through innovative waste reduction and recycling activities.  The program currently has over 2,700 participating partners and endorsers.

Fetter Recognized for Environmental Sustainability Efforts

November 10, 2010

KPPC is proud to announce that FetterGroup and Kindred Healthcare, both of Louisville, are winners of the Center's 2010 Environmental Sustainability Award.

The award recognizes KPPC client companies that have demonstrated a commitment to the principles of sustainability: ensuring the social well-being not only of their company as a whole, but also their employees and the community around them; identifying opportunities and implementing environment-related improvements to their facility; and enhancing economic outcomes related to savings from environmental improvements.

With a strong vision and continuous support from senior management, FetterGroup focuses heavily on environmental sustainability throughout its facility. The company's waste management initiatives have included working with its suppliers to reduce packaging materials, reusing materials like cardboard corners and slip sheets from incoming printing plates, and shifting to recyclable plastic skids for use within the facility. FetterGroup's efforts have reduced their solid waste pickup by 40 percent, and over 95 percent of their waste goes somewhere other than a landfill. The company has also aggressively pursued energy efficiency, adding capacitors to improve power factors, installing new motors and variable speed drives for air handlers, and installing motion sensor lighting controls in all common areas. Since 2007, FetterGroup has implemented technologies and practices that have reduced the facility's energy consumption by 32 percent.

The company has worked with KPPC, U.S. DOE, ENERGY STAR®, WasteWise, and other organizations to build its environmental sustainability program, and has openly shared its experiences with other industries and commercial facilities. Presenting the award, KPPC Executive Director Cam Metcalf said, “Over the years, we’ve worked with a lot of companies that perform random acts of excellence – but without a systematic approach, those activities are always hard to sustain. FetterGroup, on the other hand, has shown a long-term commitment to environmental sustainability, and we would like to thank you for being the company you are, the example you are in this community, and for being such a great partner for KPPC."

Both companies receiving the award this year have well-developed programs and teams, and their recent activities have spanned the social, environmental and economic aspects of sustainability.

FetterGroup 1 of 8 nationally recognized by EPA

May 7, 2010

FetterGroup was one of eight U.S. companies recognized Friday by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s new Energy Star Challenge for Industry program.

The program challenges manufacturers to reduce their energy use by 10 percent or more within five years.

Since adopting a comprehensive energy plan in 2007, Louisville-based printer FetterGroup has cut its overall energy usage by 33 percent and saved 4.7 million pounds of carbon dioxide.

“The importance of a strong energy policy in the manufacturing and industrial sectors make clear financial sense,” FetterGroup president and CEO Terry Gill in a news release. “The monetary savings we have seen from our environmental policy is the most compelling reason to pursue these measures.”

FetterGroup was a 2010 EPA Energy Star Partner of the Year, 2010 Waste Wise Partner of the Year and a Kilowatt Cup recipient, recognizing superior energy management by Louisville-based companies. As part of the Energy Star Challenge for Industry, manufacturers create an energy use baseline, set a 10 percent reduction goal, implement efficiency projects, track their energy use and verify the savings.
